Description
Stone Apsara, central India, probably 9th-12th c., h. 27 cm (restoration). This representation of a secondary type of female deity from the Hindu (and Buddhist) pantheon exploits one of their most notable characteristics, namely their status as dancers. This can be seen in her tribhanga posture, a movement typical of classical Indian dance. This piece is part of the collection assembled by Ambassador Paul André Ramseyer between 1968 and 1971, when he was Secretary of Embassy in Delhi. It features some of the major trends in the art of the Indian subcontinent from the second century AD onwards.
