Description
Stone head of a deity (probably Vishnu), north or central India, probably 10th-12th c., h. 19 cm. This sculpted head, probably representing the god Vishnu, one of the main deities of Hinduism who can be incarnated in numerous avatars (the most famous of which is Krishna), belongs to a type of representation on stone characteristic of the X-XIIth century. However, its fragmentary appearance and certain elements visible on its headdress could possibly indicate an iconographic link with Surya, the sun god. From the collection of Ambassador Paul André Ramseyer, it was acquired by him in India between 1968 and 1971.
