Description
Stone Dvarapala (temple guardian), North-East India, probably 12th century, approx. 15.5 x 17 cm. The style and colour of the stone are similar to those produced by the Pala Empire (located in present-day Bengal), and this type of figure was used to protect both Buddhist and Hindu temples. The Pala dynasty promoted Buddhism, but at the same time supported Hindu temples and scholars. This dvarpala could therefore be linked to either of these spiritual traditions.
This fragment of a high stone relief depicting a tutelary divinity protecting a temple was one of several pieces acquired by Ambassador Paul André Ramseyer during his stay in India as Secretary of Embassy in Delhi between 1968 and 1971.
