Description
Partially painted leaf taken from a manuscript on paper probably taken from the Kalpasutra, Gujarat, probably 15th-16th c., 25x10.5 cm (recto à vue). This leaflet, probably taken from a manuscript of the Kalpasutra, one of the sacred works of Jainism, depicts 11 of the 24 Thirthankaras, the great ancient masters guiding the believer towards liberation from the cycle of rebirths.
The oldest of the three Indian paintings in Ambassador Paul André Ramseyer's collection, assembled in India between 1968 and 1971, it also illustrates one of India's most enduring pictorial traditions.
