Description
Painted folio from a manuscript of the Bhagavata Purana, India, probably Orissa, late 18th-early 19th century, 35x22 cm (painting, on view). One of the major works of Hinduism, the Bhagavata Purana was often illustrated on paper manuscripts produced from the 16th century onwards. The folio offered for sale belongs to the Orissa school of painting (eastern India), characterised by the extensive use of three colours (red, yellow and blue) and the compact physiognomy of the figures. It is one of three paintings in Ambassador Paul André Ramseyer's collection, formed in India between 1968 and 1971. See for example the two leaves of a Bhagavata Purana sold at Christie's, London, 27 May 2016, lot 49. The absence of a condition report does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition. Paul André Ramseyer Collection The collection of Ambassador Paul André Ramseyer includes a group of works from the Indian subcontinent, acquired during his stay in Delhi between 1968 and 1971, when he was Secretary of the Embassy. These remarkable pieces reflect his interest in the artistic and religious wealth of this region.
