Description
Large Annakuta Picchvai (painting on cotton), Rajasthan, probably mid-late 19th century, 179.5 x 123 cm. In the 19th century, the Annakuta, a festival commemorating a miracle performed by Krishna to save villagers from a flood, was the subject of painted representations adopting a precise iconography, particularly from the town of Nathdwara in Rajasthan: Brahmins officiate around niches containing statues of Krishna, and lower down, simple devotees bring their offerings. This scene is doubled in the lower register by a representation of the sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh where this miracle is said to have taken place. This painting is one of three in the collection of Ambassador Paul André Ramseyer, assembled in India between 1968 and 1971, when he was Secretary of the Embassy in Delhi. Like the other two, it illustrates a specific school and period. See a similar painting sold at Christie's, New York, 28 March 2024, lot 95.
