Description
DAMIANO DA ODEMIRA (Pedro). Libro da imparare giocare à scachi, et de belissimi partiti... [Roma, 1524]. Small in-8° bound in half brown basane, dominot paper boards. [64] ff, signatures: A-H8. Decorated with a woodcut figure on the title page, 6 chess pieces and 92 chess diagrams, all in-text and woodcut. An uncommon, later edition of this bilingual Italian-Spanish chess manual, published in 1524, which was widely distributed in the 16th century, with nearly nine editions in circulation. It contains the famous aphorism: "If you see a good move, find out if there isn't a better one". First published in Rome in 1512, this major work is the first Italian treatise on modern chess. It offers a clear, structured summary of the game: rules, logic and strategy, enriched by analyses of openings, numerous problems and a new notation for the chessboard. The final chapter teaches how to play blind. Its author, Pedro Damiano, a Portuguese apothecary who took refuge in Italy following the expulsion of the Jews from Portugal in 1496, is one of the first theorists of the game of chess and its formalisation during the Renaissance. A charming copy in a later binding with some wear, some soiling and foxing and slightly trimmed pages.
