FIELDING (Henry). The Story of Tom Jones or the Foundling. London, Paris, Rollin, 1751. 4 vol. in-12 bound in full green morocco, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, stamped in the centre with the arms of Béatrix de Choiseul, duchesse de Gramont, inner dent. gilt (Period binding). Vol.1: [1] f., 333 pp, XI, 4 pp, Vol.2: [1] f., 333 pp, Vol.3: [2] ff, 282 pp, Vol.4: [1] f., 341 pp. Embellished with an engraved title by Charpentier repeated in each volume, a frontispiece and fifteen engraved figures after Gravelot, as well as engraved bands, lettering and endpapers. A fine copy that belonged to Béatrix de Choiseul-Stainville (1730-1794), Duchess de Gramont, sister of Louis XV's famous minister, who ran a renowned salon and was a leading figure in Parisian high society. Her books, richly bound with her coat of arms, bear witness to her refined taste and great attachment to literature. Very good condition Binding: The colour of the morocco is rather water green The leather is dry Some stains and scratches on boards 2 lower corners dulled and dented (vol. 2 and 4) Good condition of headpieces Worm damage to one of the spines Inside pages: Several spots, but overall pleasant and fairly clean Missing false titles of volumes 1, 2 and 4 The dedicatory epistle of T1 and the 4 errata pages that follow it are bound at the end of the volume and not at the beginning, hence the difference in collation with Cohen, 394-395 Small tears in the margins of several leaves in T2 (tears with missing pages)
