Description
[LA ROCHEFOUCAULD (François duc de)]. Mémoires de M.D.L.R. Sur les Brigues à la mort de Loüys XIII, les Guerres de Paris &, de Guyenne, &, la Prison des Princes. Cologne [Brussels], Pierre Van Dyck [Foppens], 1662. Small in-12 bound in full red morocco, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, ornate gilt ribbed spine, title label, inside indent, gilt fillet on the edges (18th c. binding). [2] ff. 400 pp. Third edition published in the same year as the original.
A great rebellious lord and a direct participant in the troubles of his time, La Rochefoucauld's Memoirs are a first-rate account of the intrigues surrounding the death of Louis XIII, the civil wars and the rivalries between princes and royal power. The lively narrative combines conspiracies, incisive portraits and political scenes, already foreshadowing the finely-honed analysis and biting lucidity of the author of the Maximes.
Published clandestinely in 1662, these Memoirs aroused a great deal of interest and were immediately reprinted many times, testifying to a real bookshop success in the 17th century.

Good condition
Please note: After examining the bibliographies at our disposal (Tchemerzine, Marchand, Willems, Rahir), we have attempted to identify our edition precisely, but this is merely a professional opinion. No claim will be accepted as to the identification of this edition as the Third Edition.
Binding:
Probably rebound
3 wormholes at spine ends
Lower part of upper spine split
Inside pages:
Pages cut, there are almost no margins
Our copy corresponds to the second original edition described by Tchemerzine (corrected faults, no errata leaf, etc.), except for the buffalo finial on p.1 (our copy has the finial right side up). We therefore believe that our copy is from the 3rd edition, like the one described by Rahir and not mentioned by Tchémerzine.
This brings our copy closer to the second original edition according to Tchémerzine:
title conforms, with the play announced in the same layout, sphere and address "Chez Pierre Van Dyck à Cologne", general pagination and internal parts conform, no errata leaf, presence of the lesson "espargne" p. 26, l. 24, siren p. 277, last line of p. 400 reduced to the single word "importunitez". The pagination errors also correspond to Tchémerzine's description: p. 237 numbered 137, p. 276 numbered 376.
However, there are two differences from Tchémerzine's description: the buffalo head on p. 1 is right side up in our copy, not upside down, and p. 279, announced by Tchémerzine as numbered 879, is numbered 379 in this copy.
Rahir's remarks lead us to believe that this is a 3rd edition very close to the Second:
Reprint of the preceding edition, in which the errors have been corrected. As the differences between the 2nd and 3rd editions are very slight, we transcribe the
first lines of the errata, which will make it easier to distinguish them, as the errors no longer exist in the 3rd edition:
P. 8, last line, after d'Anjou, delete the full stop.
P. 11, last line, ont, read on.
P. 12, l. 23, à, read de.
P. 26, l. 24, l'espargne, read l'espargne, etc.
These 4 errors mentioned above are indeed corrected in our copy
