A major poet of the French Renaissance, Clément Marot (1496-1544) was the link between the medieval rhetoricians and the future Pléiade. A protégé of François I and close to the humanist circle of Marguerite de Navarre, he renewed French poetry through the clarity and elegance of his style. His epistles, rondeaux and epigrams won him immense renown from 1520-1530 onwards. Compromised in the religious tensions of his time by his translation of the Psalms, he was imprisoned and then exiled to Ferrara and Geneva. The Dutch edition of 1700 bears witness to the lasting posterity of his work and the renewed interest in the great authors of the Renaissance. Brunet, III, 1458. Very good condition Binding: Very good condition, except for the 2 upper jaws rubbed over a few millimetres. Inside pages: Very clean (copy has been washed) No visible tears or damage
