Jacques Peletier du Mans (1517-1582), a Renaissance humanist, was a poet, mathematician and language theorist. Close to the spirit of the Pléiade, he played an active role in illustrating the French language, which he sought to enrich and regularise, even going so far as to propose a spelling reform based on phonetic principles. His poetic work, marked by imitation of the Ancients and high formal standards, bears witness to this dual literary and scholarly ambition. Published at the end of his life, the Louanges (1581) offer a synthesis of his art, combining celebratory pieces and implicit reflections on the powers and uses of French.
