ROUSSEAU (Jean-Jacques). Collection complète des œuvres. S.l. [Kehl], De l'Imprimerie de la Société Littéraire-Typographique, 1783-1789. 30 vols (out of 34) in-12 bound in full red morocco, smooth spine decorated with gilt, quadruple gilt roulette framing the covers and finial in spandrels, inside serration, gilt edges (period binding). Several hors-texte figures after Marillier, copper-engraved by Dambrun. A fine copy despite most of the spines being sunned. Not collated, lacking the 4 vols. of the second supplement. The first collective edition published after Rousseau's death, this prestigious printing by the Société typographique de Kehl was undertaken under the direction of Beaumarchais, who acquired the author's manuscripts in order to produce as faithful a text as possible. Illustrated with engraved figures after Marillier, it is one of the finest editions of Rousseau's works in the 18th century. Despite the absence of the four volumes of the second supplement, the set retains all its bibliophilic and historical interest in its elegant contemporary red morocco binding.
