Description
SIGEA DE VELASCO (Luisa). Syntra Aloisiae Sygeae Toletanae... Paris, Denis du Pré [ex Typographia Dionisii à Prato], 1566. Small in-4° bound in full jansenist red morocco, spine ribbed and decorated with stamped fillet, gilt fillet on the edges, inner lace, gilt edges. Binding signed Thibaron-Joly. [8] ff. decorated with a title vignette, headpieces and lettering. First edition, published posthumously, in Latin, comprising: the poem Syntra proper, epigrams by various humanists addressed to Luisa, a letter of praise from Pope Paul III and the poetic "tomb" composed by André de Resende and Claude Monsel. The only edition from the XVIᵉ century, a crucial document for the history of Iberian female humanism, a very rare work. A very fine, washed copy. Luisa Sigea de Velasco (Tarancón, 1522 - Burgos, 1560), also known by the names Louise Sigée, Luísa Sigeia, Luísa Sigea Toledana or in Latin Aloysia Sygaea Toletana, was a highly educated 16th-century Spanish poet and humanist, lady-in-waiting at the Portuguese court from 1542 and Latin tutor to the Infanta Maria. This book presents her poem Syntra, a poetic description of the forest of Sintra, near Lisbon, in which a nymph rises from the waters and prophesies the marriage of the Infanta Maria to a prince destined to rule the world - an allusion to the marriage negotiations with the future Philip II of Spain. Very good condition. Binding: Some minor damage to the front board in the lower part. Corners and headpieces in good condition. Very slight rubbing on the lower cover. Inside pages : Washed copy Pages clean Slight traces of old oxidation and stains on last leaf. Very light stains at the top of the title page.
