Description
WASHINGTON (George). Epistles Domestic, Confidential, and Official of the General Washington. New-York, G. Robinson and J. Bull, London, F. and C. Rivington, 1796. In-8° bound in full glazed blond calf, spine ribbed and gilt, double gilt fillet framing the boards stamped in the centre with the arms of the 1st Earl Cawdor, gilt roulette to the necks and int. Binding signed Clarke &, Bedford. XVI, 303 pp. First English edition of George Washington's Epistles, a mixture of authentic correspondence (1778-1783) and apocryphal letters intended to discredit him. An interesting account of one of the most famous attempts at political manipulation during the Revolutionary War and at the end of his presidency. Washington himself publicly denounced them.
Charming binding signed with the arms of John Frederick Campbell, 1st Earl Cawdor (1790-1860).
