Hand-coloured lithographed map pasted on cardboard, showing the travel route from the South Pass of the Rocky Mountains to San Francisco Bay, originally published in 1848. This map, produced by Charles Preuss, Frémont's official cartographer, was used by gold seekers in particular to locate the main key crossing points (Sacramento, Sierra Nevada, etc.) from 1848, the date of the gold rush.
