Description
FITZGERALD (F. Scott). The Great Gatsby. New York, Charles Scribner's Sons, 1925. In-8° bound in publisher's green full cloth, smooth spine with gilt title, cold-stamped title on upper board.
First printing of the first edition of this monument to American literature.
Set between Long Island and Manhattan, and inspired by the social milieu that Fitzgerald frequented in Great Neck (1922-1924), Gatsby the Magnificent depicts, through Nick Carraway, the drift of the American dream. Reworked several times, the novel did not take its final form until after the author had settled on the Riviera in 1924. Critically acclaimed on publication, it did not achieve the commercial success it was hoped for. Very good condition
