[HELVETICA]. BEATTIE (William). Picturesque Switzerland. London, George Virtue , [Paris, Ferrier], 1836. 2 vol. in-4° bound in full green morocco with plate decoration and gilt fillet framing the boards, gilt edges (period binding). Vol.1: VIII, 192 pp, Vol.2: [2] ff, 136 pp. The 2 vols. illustrated with a total of 108 hors texte engravings (including engraved titles), plus a folding map of Switzerland at the end of the second volume. Interesting picturesque album on Switzerland, typical of the 19th century, with engraved views of Swiss landscapes, towns, mountains and sites.
Fairly good condition
Bindings a little tired:
Hinges cracked and restored, jaws partially cracked and rubbed, headpieces restored, corners restored, spine of vol 2 glued back.
The boards are in rather good condition except for some rubbing at the edges and a few faint scratches.
Inside pages:
Uneven foxing, especially on the engraved titles, and in particular on vol.1.
The whole is mostly clean and the foxing generally does not affect the engravings: it is located in the margins when there are some.
The engravings are protected by serpents
