Description
71. Saône-et-Loire. Varennes-le-Grand. [Fr. Benoit, parish priest and beekeeper]. The Rectory Apiary. (Photo: Bontron. Written by Fr. Benoit, Varennes-le-Grand, 21 September 1936. ‘I can still supply you with some very good, lovely 1936 honey from my own harvest – I’ve been particularly fortunate this year – half of which has already gone. You know as well as I do that this year has been a poor one in terms of both yield and quality. Mine – the first batch is very clear and very good; the second is of poorer quality but very thick and sweet – is offered to you at 800 francs per 100 K, collected from the apiary. I shall deliver the first batch, etc. That is, 80 K at the price of 100 K, gross for net. A beekeeper (2,600 hives) has [illegible] my entire harvest, which he believes to be 1,500 K. I have too many customers to deliver it all like that. I hope these prices do not put you off, but I doubt that the price of honey, which has risen, will fall tomorrow. […]”
