Born in Boulot (Haute-Saône) on 26 August 1821; died in Dole (Jura) on 16 July 1890. A pupil of Besson. Founded, with Philippon, the *Journal amusant*. Established a studio where several other draughtsmen were trained (Dictionary of Artists and Artisans of Franche-Comté, Abbé Paul Brune, 1912).
The museum in Dole holds a significant collection of drawings by Pierre-Auguste Belin. A pupil of Désiré Besson at the Dole School of Drawing, Belin quickly made a name for himself in the capital, where his work as a genre artist led him to establish a studio in which Jules Chéret (1836–1932) and Alfred Grévin (1827–1892) were trained. He joined forces with the journalist and illustrator Charles Philippon (1800–1862) to create the *Journal Amusant*, ‘a humorous work in which the foibles of human nature are portrayed with such subtlety and wit ’ (La République du Jura, 26 July 1890). The theme of festivities is a recurring one in Belin’s illustrations. Notably, in the *Journal Amusant* of 2 February 1856, he published *The Entrance to the Opera’s Masked Ball*, which he subsequently developed in several works, including *The Exit from a Masked Ball*. The high society of the Second Empire and its taste for ancient art is reflected in watercolours with shimmering colours, characterised by lively lines and attention to detail, as seen in the theatre costumes designed by Grévin and the carnival scenes by Théodore Maurisset (Bénédicte Gaulard, *Éclectique XIXe*, exhibition catalogue of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dole, 2014).
