Code des médicaments, or French Pharmacopoeia, published by order of His Majesty by the Faculty of Medicine of Paris in the year 1818, translated from Latin into French by Messrs Pavet and La Roche […] revised and corrected by Messrs Hallé, Leroux, Henry and Richard. Paris, Hacquart, 1819. In-4° format, [3] ff., cxcvj, 373 pp. in marbled fawn half-basane, plain decorated spine, title page in green morocco, marbled edges. (Contemporary binding). A rare first French edition, bearing the publisher’s autograph signature, of the new Codex for the whole of France. This is the French translation from the Latin of the 1818 Codex. The copy has been inserted at the end with a printed leaflet on vases, followed by 20 folios, of which 9 pages contain medical recipes and potions written and signed by THEVENON (for gonorrhoea, jaundice, itchy skin, vomiting, scabies, baldness, etc.); furthermore, the copy is enriched with various documents: a certificate, a prescription, potions and ointments, including: ‘New Price List for Pharmaceutical Extracts’ from DAUSSE Aîné, in Paris, 1836; Notes on the use of pectoral remedies, 1844; pills… Ex-libris label belonging to THEVENON, a doctor practising in Craponne, Haute-Loire. The binding is scuffed, with the cardboard indented at the lower corner of the upper cover; there are a few water stains. The copy has been well-used but is nevertheless in very fair condition.
