Institutions of Surgery, in which everything relating to this art is treated in a clear and innovative order: A work spanning nearly forty years, illustrated with a large number of engravings depicting the most approved and useful instruments, the manual of surgical procedures, apparatus and dressings. Avignon, J. J. Niel, 1770. 2 vols. in-4°, 16, XLII, 627, [5] pp.; 639, [37] pp. Large portrait of the author on the frontispiece and 40 folding plates, out of text. Mottled fawn sheepskin, spine with 5 raised bands and floral decoration, title and volume labels in fawn morocco, double blind-stamped fillet on the covers, gilt roulette on the edges, marbled edges. (Contemporary binding). First French edition of the famous treatise on surgery by one of the finest surgeons of the 18th century, the father of modern surgery in Germany. (Hoefer). Complete with all 40 fold-out plates. Of note is the interesting bibliographical catalogue of surgical works (I, pp. I–XLII) Handwritten ex-libris ‘Isaltet’. Quérard, IV, 56. Holes with missing material on pp. XXVII–XXX of Volume I; a tear without any loss on plates V, XII, XVI and XXXX; some marginal water stains and a few discolouration marks on the text, none of which are serious. Faults in the worn binding.
