Grotius’s famous treatise on the freedom of the seas, first published in 1609, was commissioned by the Dutch East India Company to provide a legal basis for Dutch maritime trade in the context of peace negotiations with Spain. This volume also includes several related treatises: *Dissertatio de maribus* by Paul MERULA, *Apologia pro navigationibus Hollandorum, adversus Pontum Heuterum* by Marcus Zuerius BOXHORN, and *Tractatus pacis, mutui commercii, sive intercursus mercium, conclusus Londini anno de 1495*.
