LESTANG (Antoine de). History of Gaul, and the Conquests of the Gauls in Italy, Greece and Asia. Bourdeaus, Simon Millanges, 1618. In-4°, [6], 409, 1 blank leaf, [78] pp. Copper-engraved printer’s mark on the title page. Havana calfskin, spine with five raised bands, red morocco endpapers, gilt fillet on the edges, speckled edges. (Contemporary binding). A rare work published in 1618 in Bordeaux by Antoine de Lestang, then President of the Parliament of Toulouse. ‘This curious work, particularly with regard to the southern part of France, is not easily found’ (Brunet). Handwritten bookplate of Jacques LAMBIN; label from the bookseller and bookbinder DURY, in Southampton. Goldsmith, L-1054; Brunet, III, 1018. Restored binding, in fair condition; marginal water damage to the first two quires, without affecting the text. The author’s portrait is missing: the two lines appearing on the verso have been cut out and pasted at the end of the preceding folio. The text remains complete.
