FERRERAS (Juan de). A General History of Spain, translated from the Spanish by Jean de Ferreras, enriched with critical historical notes, intaglio engravings and maps. By M. d’Hermilly. Paris, Gissey, Le Breton, Ganeau, Bordelet, Quillau fils, De la Guette, 1751. 10 vols. in-4°. Mottled fawn calfskin, spine with five raised bands and floral decoration, title page in red morocco, volume pages in black morocco, blind-stamped borders on the covers, double gilt fillet on the edges, red edges. (Contemporary binding). First French edition of this important work, first published in Spanish in 1700. ‘An excellent translation. ’ (Quérard). Frontispiece, 21 vignettes, 11 letters and 10 large copperplate maps, complete with maps of Corsica and Sardinia. From the library of the Portuguese bibliophile and historian Annibal Fernandes THOMAZ (1849–1911), with his engraved bookplate. Brunet, II, 1235; Quérard, III, 112. A few tears at the map fastenings; minor water damage to Volumes IV and V [affecting the two maps in this volume]; handwritten bookplate dated 1777 scraped off from each title page. Without the errata at the end of vol. II. Very slight defects to the binding. A good copy.
