Cologne, Published by the Company, 1738. 2 vols. in-12, comprising XXXVIII, 547, [53] pp.; 519, [54] pp. Fawn calfskin, spine with 5 decorated raised bands, title page in red morocco, volume pages in fawn morocco, gilt roulette on the edges and fillets, edges speckled with red. (Contemporary binding). Claude LANCELOT (1615–1695), a Jansenist monk and grammarian, was involved in the founding of the Petites écoles de Port-Royal from May 1638 onwards. At that time, he was under the spiritual guidance of the Abbé de SAINT-CYRAN. He remained loyal to him despite SAINT-CYRAN’s imprisonment. In his *Mémoires*, he recounts what he witnessed of the spiritual work of the guide of Port-Royal. Binding scuffed and stained; interior in good condition.
