BUFFON (Georges-Louis Leclerc, Count of). Complete Works […] Arranged and preceded by a historical note by M. A. Richard. Paris, Pourrat, 1835. 20 vols. of text and 2 vols. of Atlas, in-8°. Raspberry-coloured half-basane, spine with 4 faux-nerfs decorated with hot- and cold-stamping, title and volume labels in green morocco. (Contemporary binding). Complete set of 20 volumes of text, mostly untrimmed. Large engraved portrait of BUFFON (small corner loss without damage to the engraving), 2 engraved title pages, 1 large table, 4 folded engraved maps and 219 plates, of which 213 are in colour (66 in the ‘Mammals’ volume and 153 in the ‘Birds’ volume). Ronsil, Bibliographie ornithologique, I, 413 (1833–34). Inevitable foxing, sun-faded spines, very slight defects to the binding. Covers of the atlases rubbed and sun-faded; the ‘Birds’ atlas is loose at the internal seams, with a tear at one head joint. The atlases have been well-used; the endpapers are sometimes absent or partially missing, and the engravings are occasionally stained or soiled, but the collection as a whole remains attractive.
