Red half-shagreen, decorated ribbed spine, title and volume numbers gilt, speckled edges. (Contemporary binding). A fine set, partly in its original state, in contemporary bindings. Portrait of the author engraved by HOPWOOD after DUPONT on the frontispiece; portrait of Madame de STAEL engraved by TAVERNIER; and 88 out-of-text engravings, including one spread across two pages, many of which are after Tony JOHANNOT. The so-called ‘Subscribers’ edition (volumes I to XIV), followed by the *Histoire des Girondins* (volumes XVI to XXIII) in first edition, without the subscription prospectus, but with the card on pp. 19–20 in volume V; the second volume (vol. XXV) of *Histoire de la révolution de 1848* also in first edition; *Raphaël* in second edition, rare; *Les Confidences* (vol. XXVII), first illustrated edition; *Le Tailleur de pierres de Saint-Point* (vol. XXVIII) in its first edition; *Geneviève* (vol. XXIX) in its first retail edition; *Les Nouvelles Confidences* (vol. XXX), in its first edition. Handwritten bookplate: M. DUBRULLE Vicaire, IV, 985, 990–992, 998, 1000, 1002, 1053. Some foxing; the leaves of pp. 135–138 of vol.
