Paul Benoit GAILLARD (Langres, 1892 – Paris, 1941) A set of 10 oil paintings on cardboard and 1 oil painting on panel depicting mythological scenes and Bacchanalia, including nymphs, Bacchus, Pegasus, a sleeping putto, a satyr and Cupid. Some are signed in the lower left or right corner and dated 1927 Some feature other subjects on the reverse (nudes, sketches of towns or landscapes) The largest works measure 24 x 40 cm, 27 x 40 cm, 27.5 x 35.5 cm and 27 x 35 cm (Signs of wear; creases on one of the panels (Bacchus); the works will require cleaning) Provenance: the artist’s family A little-known artist, Paul Benoit Gaillard was born in Langres in 1892. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and lived with his wife in the 14th arrondissement. He died in Paris in 1941. He painted extensively, notably the landscapes of the Nièvre and the area around Saint-Léger-des-Vignes, where he owned a second home, as well as Paris and Langres. The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Troyes holds a number of the artist’s works. To date, only a few paintings have appeared on the public auction market. The collection of 150 canvases and small works or studies on panel that we are presenting here comes from the artist’s family.
