Paul Benoit GAILLARD (Langres, 1892 – Paris, 1941) A set comprising 5 oil paintings on cardboard and 1 oil painting on panel, including a portrait of a young man (‘Portrait’, inscribed on the reverse and numbered 9), two views of villages (the first dated ‘34’ for 1934), one of which is set in winter, a languid nude, a scene of people bathing and playing by a lake, and a view of a church behind trees. All are signed in the lower left or right corner; one is located in Champvert, Nièvre The largest: 27 x 35 cm (Signs of wear; the works will require cleaning) Provenance: the artist’s family A little-known artist, Paul Benoit Gaillard was born in Langres in 1892. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and lived with his wife in the 14th arrondissement. He died in Paris in 1941. He painted extensively, notably the landscapes of the Nièvre and the area around Saint-Léger-des-Vignes, where he owned a holiday home, as well as Paris and Langres. The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Troyes holds a number of the artist’s works. To date, only a few paintings have appeared on the public auction market. The collection of 150 canvases and small works or studies on panel that we are presenting here comes from the artist’s family.
