Paul Benoit GAILLARD (Langres, 1892 – Paris, 1941) Set of 6 oil paintings on cardboard, including: - a child playing in the garden (signed bottom right) - two village scenes (signed bottom left and right) - two scenes of languid nudes (one of which is signed lower right) - a still life with wine and cheese (signed lower right) The largest: 35.5 x 27.5 cm (Signs of wear; the works will require cleaning) Provenance: the artist’s family A little-known artist, Paul Benoit Gaillard was born in Langres in 1892. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and lived with his wife in the 14th arrondissement. He died in Paris in 1941. He painted extensively, notably the landscapes of the Nièvre and the area around Saint-Léger-des-Vignes, where he owned a second home, as well as Paris and Langres. The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Troyes holds a number of the artist’s works. To date, only a few paintings have appeared on the public auction market. The collection of 150 canvases and small works or studies on panel that we are presenting comes from the artist’s family.
