Description
René LALIQUE (1860–1945).
A round brooch depicting a white glass snake, moulded and pressed onto a pink mirror-finished tin base. Gilded metal setting, signed ‘Lalique’ on the reverse.
Diameter: 4.5 cm
René Lalique was a French jeweller and master glassmaker, a leading figure in the French Art Nouveau movement, whose iconography he embraced. He pioneered the use of volume in jewellery and the incorporation of new materials, including glass. The snake brooch was created in 1911.
Featured in Félix Marcilhac’s *Catalogue Raisonné René Lalique*, page 544. Featured in the 1928 catalogue, removed in 1932 and not included again after 1947.
