Master’s mark of Johann Gottlieb Kurz, silversmith in Schwäbisch Gmünd (GK mark above a shamrock within a shield) Gross weight 228.10 g Height 97 cm Condition report: Scratches on the wood Johann Gottlieb Kurz was a German silversmith and manufacturer based in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Baden-Württemberg, a town traditionally renowned for its silversmithing and silverware production. In 1895, he founded the Gottlieb Kurz workshop there, specialising in the manufacture of silverware. His workshop produced, in particular, table services, vases, boxes, candlesticks and decorative objects. Pieces attributed to the workshop are generally recognisable by the maker’s mark ‘GK’, accompanied, depending on the period, by various regulatory hallmarks certifying the silver’s fineness. The Kurz firm’s production followed in the tradition of Schwäbisch Gmünd’s fine silversmithing and continued throughout the 20th century, with pieces notably in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles.
