Description
Shirin Neshat (born 1957) *Munis* (*Women without Men*) 2008 Colour photographic print on paper, signed lower right This unnumbered print was produced in an edition of around one hundred copies 44 x 65 cm Provenance: > Private collection, Paris This image featured on the poster for the film ‘Women without Men’. Released in 2008, her first feature film—made in collaboration with the Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, from which this still is taken—is the eponymous adaptation of the novel, set at that pivotal moment in Iranian history when the British and Americans instigated a coup to overthrow the democratically elected government of Dr Mossadegh. In this image, Munis’s character – a victim of abuse at the hands of a fundamentalist brother – stands out in colour, imbued with a quiet strength, amidst a crowd of vindictive men in the midst of a demonstration, as if foreshadowing the current situation in Iran, where women continue to be mistreated.
