"The Emperor Napoleon I in antique style". Ring presenting a shell cameo on a pink background of the Emperor crowned with laurels, wearing a toga, profile to the right. Mounted in 18k gold, drypoint engraved "266". Triple ring separating at the mounting Fragmentary hallmark and later 75° owl hallmark Gross weight: 7.9 g Cameo size: 33 x 24 mm A.B.E. (Cracks to the profile and bottom). First Empire period Historical background: The First Empire was a period of return to antiquity in the decorative arts. Cameos were particularly prized by the imperial family and the Emperor. They were often made by Italian artists (ours, of great finesse, is unfortunately unsigned) and were mounted as diadems, pendants or, as here, rings.
