Description
Set comprising an Ottoman headdress and tunic decorated with five gold coins and pearls
(accidents and missing pieces)
Weight of the detached gold piece: 2.2g
(Total estimated weight of the gold pieces: 10g)
A pair of red leather babouches is attached.
Tunisian-inspired headdress consisting of a rigid skullcap, shaped like a quarter sphere, with the front held together by black embroidery (amara). The skullcap is shaped using strips of cardboard sewn together, or old family papers. The front of the bonnet is decorated with gold and pearl coins.
The headdress may have come from Sfax in Tunisia, a town renowned since Antiquity for its mastery of craftsmanship, particularly the manufacture of gold and jewellery. This headdress, also known as a Koufiya, is traditional, very richly decorated and worn for weddings and celebrations.
