Description
BERNADOTTE Charles Jean-Baptiste (1763-1844), King of Sweden. Autograph signed with his initials. ½ p. on a bifeuillet in-4. [Stockholm, 7 August 1829]. King of Sweden under the name of Charles XIV, Bernadotte writes a few lines for the Countess de Montalembert. "The universe is the home of the brave. Agrippa was adopted by Augustus. One enters the family of Kings as a result of great deeds: to remain there, one must do good deeds". An annotation dated "Norrköping this 10th August 1829" on the front of the second leaf indicates that these few words were intended for the Countess de Montalembert before she left for Paris because of her daughter's illness. Élise Rosée Forbes was the wife of Marc-René de Montalembert, who was French ambassador to Sweden from 1827 to 1829. Minor tears at the folds. Ink stains on verso of second leaf. From the Pierre Pruvost collection (sale Paris, 26 November 2003, no. 21).
