Description
BRUMMEL George (1778-1840). L.A.S. "private". Calais, March 8 1819. 4 pp. on a bifeuillet in-12.
Long and rare letter from the "prince dandy" to the diplomat Stuart de Rothesay (?). Riddled with debt, Brummell had just left England for France, where he would spend the rest of his life. "You will most essentially oblige me by transmitting the petition that accompanies this note to the French minister of War. It is on the part of François? My servant who was drawn for a soldier the 3d of December in his native department (Haute-Saône) during the time he was living in my service at this place...".
He asks her to intervene on his behalf, no doubt on behalf of one of his servants with Gouvion-Saint-Cyr "...if you could have the kindness to kindness to say one word to Gouvion St Cyr ... I am confident he might arrange in an instant. The man is everything to me... "
