WOMEN / VIARDOT Pauline (1821-1910), singer. L.A.S. to her "niece", Eugénie Coran (1851-1918), also a singer, the daughter of Eugénie Mayer who had married her elder brother Manuel. Karlsruhe, around 1870. She justified not going to Paris for a fortnight, preferring to look after her children, of whom she gave news, and because it would "only serve to give [her] regrets, as it [would] be impossible in such a short time to see [her] friends and acquaintances at ease, to hear everything [she] would like to hear (including a bit of Offenbach, which I have never seen on stage!) to see Paris at last, a Paris that is almost unknown to her, as it is to any true Parisian.
