ORDER OF THE LEGION OF HONOUR (1802) – FIRST EMPIRE – SILVER EAGLE OF THE THIRD TYPE (1808–1815), in chiselled silver and enamel, hallmark of the lictor’s fasces on the ring, 37 x 57 mm, centres enamelled in gold; the obverse centre features the profile of Emperor Napoleon I, head crowned with a laurel wreath on a lined background with the inscription ‘NAPOLEON EMP. DES FRANÇAIS’, on the reverse an imperial eagle on a thunderbolt (head turned to the right) on a lined background with the inscription ‘HONNEUR ET PATRIE’, ornate foliage, a movable crown with 8 fleurons surmounted by a small cross, smooth band; chips and restorations to the white enamel at the tips of the branches, as well as to the blue enamel of the centres and the green enamel of the foliage; an old but later sun-faded ribbon; ABE.
