Description
PARDOE (Julia) BEAUTIES OF THE BOSPHORUS Quarto, unbound. Beautiful engravings after William Henry Bartlett, depicting a series of views of Constantinople and its surroundings. Virtue & Co. Some water stains. NOTE In 1836, Julia Pardoe, then aged thirty, arrived in Istanbul with her father, en route to Egypt. Dazzled by the city’s beauty, she decided to stay there to write her second book, Beauties of the Bosphorus. She collaborated on this work with William Henry Bartlett, one of the greatest typographic illustrators of his generation. Covering a wide range of subjects, this book pays particular attention not only to the architecture of Constantinople and its surroundings, but also to its inhabitants and their customs.
