"DZEFERDAR". OTTOMAN FLINTLOCK RIFLE made of wood, with a stock inlaid with mother-of-pearl plaques of various shapes (rosettes, small waves, triangles, mandorlas…) riveted with brass nails, and a smooth-bore barrel with facets very finely decorated with scrolls of palmettes and stylised flowers inlaid with silver fillets. Hallmarked on the top of the barrel. With its cleaning rod. (Some missing pieces and cracked mother-of-pearl inlays). Ottoman Balkans, Herzegovina or Montenegro, 19th century. AN OTTOMAN MOTHER-OF-PEARL INLAID FLINTLOCK RIFLE "DZEFERDAR", HERZEGOVINA OR MONTENEGRO, 19TH CENTURY. LENGTH 158 CM (62 3/16 IN.) Provenance René Lucien Marie Joseph JACTEL (1887–1914), lieutenant in the 1st Zouave Regiment and curator of Moroccan antiquities under Lyautey.
