NOTE
The Chemla pottery workshop was founded in Tunis by Haïm Chemla.
The first workshop was located on Place des Potiers in Tunis during the French Protectorate. Jacob’s three sons, Victor, Albert and Moïse (known as Mouche), were involved in the workshop’s work. Victor, the eldest, a chemist and technician, mastered the production of glazes and improved the technique; he was also a skilled decorator and signed his pieces with a bunch of grapes. Albert, the second son, was mainly responsible for business relations; he also helped with the decoration of the pieces and signed his work with a small, humorous-looking cat. Moïse (known as Mouche), the third son, was an outstanding decorator; he signed his work with a small stylised fish.
