NOTE
The term ‘Qallaline’ refers more broadly to Tunisian ceramic production between the 17th and 19th centuries.
The word ‘Qallaline’, the plural of ‘qallal’, encompasses both the pottery trade and the district in Tunis where the potters’ workshops were located. Qallaline pottery is the heir to a great Hispano-Moorish tradition in terms of colours and earthenware techniques. However, the Ottoman influence gives it a new style. Wall-covering ceramics, which are very common, come in two types: tiles with repetitive floral or geometric patterns, and panels most often depicting a mihrab and floral elements, framed within an architectural setting of arched domes and columns. Some beautiful examples can be admired at the Bardo Palace in Tunis, the former residence of the Beys of Tunis.
