Description
LARGE DOUBLE-SIDED ALBUM PAGE. A LARGE AND BEAUTIFUL MOGUL MINIATURE in gouache and gold on paper, depicting a young prince seated comfortably beneath a canopy set up in a palace garden, in front of a fountain, young women coming to meet him to bring him messages, and maids moving around him holding flywhisks and trays laden with food and drink. Beautiful borders adorned with gilded foliage on a red background and animals amongst the leafy stems. On the reverse, Persian calligraphy in gouache, ink and gold on paper, comprising eight lines in slanted Nasta’liq script set within clouds, set against a background of golden clouds, within a wide bright pink outer margin and a celadon green frame mounted on a page illuminated with golden foliage. Two pencil inscriptions in the margin, on the calligraphy side, read, top left: ‘36’ in Arabic script, and bottom left: ‘Sosre or Kosro? 74’ Mughal India, early 18th century. A LARGE FRAMED INDIAN MINIATURE PAINTING, GOUACHE AND GOLD ON PAPER, A YOUNG NOBLEMAN SEATED ON A THRONE IN THE COURTYARD AND BEING ATTENDED BY VARIOUS LADIES, MUGHAL INDIA, EARLY 18TH CENTURY. ON THE REVERSE, A QATA. DIM. (OVERALL) 38 X 25.8 CM (14 3/4 X 10 1/16 IN.) - DIM. (MINIATURE) 26 X 17.5 CM (10 1/4 X 6 7/8 IN.) The Nasta’liq calligraphic exercise on the reverse is a repetition of a Persian couplet from a ghazal by Khaqani, as well as an Arabic couplet, in the siyah-mashq style of ‘Imad al-Hasani.
