Description
PERSIAN EMBROIDERY
executed in multicoloured silk threads on cotton canvas, taken from a pair of women’s trousers, featuring a characteristic motif of diagonal bands filled with stylised flowers.
Iran, probably Isfahan, Qajar period, first half of the 19th century.
AN EMBROIDERED TROUSER PANEL, PERSIA, PROBABLY ISFAHAN, CA. 1800–1860.
DIM. 71 X 53 CM (27 15/16 X 20 7/8 IN.)
NOTE
This example of dense and complex embroidery was produced mainly in Isfahan, but also in Yazd and Kashan, to form the cuffs of shalwar, the voluminous traditional trousers worn by women.
The Victoria & Albert Museum holds several panels of a similar type, dated 1800–1860.
