NOTE
Chapur II (309–379) was one of the most prosperous monarchs of the Sassanid Empire. In Roman history, he is known as the King of Persia who killed Emperor Julian (r. 361–363) at Samarra and who concluded a humiliating peace treaty with Emperor Jovian (r. 363–364). In Firdausi’s Book of Kings (Shahnameh), his story is recounted in the final section, which chronicles the Sassanid kings of Iran. A Safavid painting from the famous Shahnameh of Shah Tahmasp, attributed to Aqa Mirak, Tabriz, 1530–35, depicts Caesar as a captive before Shapur II. It is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (inv. 1970.301.60). All Roman emperors took the title of Caesar in memory of Julius Caesar.
