Description
GIUSEPPE CANTAGALLI MANUFACTURE. LARGE ROUND PLATE IN THE IZNIK STYLE in ceramic, based on a 16th-century model, with a painted decoration in shades of blue and green accented with manganese, featuring a large floral composition and saz palm leaves, with a scalloped rim decorated with alternating plant motifs on a blue background, the reverse alternating flowers and floral stems. Marked with a rooster and the number ‘2’ on the base. (slight chipping of the glaze on the rim). Italy, Florence, c. 1895. A CANTAGALLI IZNIK STYLE POTTERY DISH, ITALY, CA. 1895. DIAM. 39.5 CM (15 9/16 IN.) NOTE Ulisse Cantagalli (1839–1901) founded the Manifattura Cantagalli in Florence in 1878 with his brother Giuseppe. Cantagalli ceramics in the ‘Iznik’ style are recognisable by the distinctive rooster mark stamped on the base of the pieces. This unique signature, along with the unusual size and shape of many Cantagalli vases, demonstrates that the Italian producers were not simply seeking to reproduce Iznik ceramics (Walter B. Denny, Iznik: the Artistry of the Ottoman Ceramics, London, 2004, p. 222). The dish presented here appears closer to the Ottoman originals dating from around 1550–1555, likely to a dish held at the Metropolitan Museum, New York. During his stay in Florence in 1892, William de Morgan commissioned the decorators at Cantagalli and used the factory’s kilns to produce some of his pieces.
