Description
SET OF TWO "TANCHIFA" FROM ALGIERS Reversible embroidery in multicoloured silk threads on linen gauze, decorated with scrollwork and fleurons with serrated edges, flanked by small flowers and foliage. The embroidery was executed in satin stitch ("ma'alka") for the filling of the motifs and in braided stitch for the fine border. (Signs of wear, small stains and holes). Algeria, Algiers, late 18th century. TWO EMBROIDERED "TANCHIFA" SILK PANELS, ALGIERS, LATE 18TH CENTURY. DIM. 232 X 40 CM (91 5/16 X 15 3/4 IN.) - 210 X 30 CM (82 11/16 X 11 13/16 IN.) NOTE It was customary to hang this textile panel at the entrance to a courtyard or inside bedrooms to create areas of privacy. It may also have been left in its original form to hang alongside similar panels, or used to cover a mirror or a divan. Other embroideries, using the same technique and motifs, served as wall hangings (the backing fabric was then thicker), but also as scarves (“tanchifa”), and, in narrower formats, as hammam headdresses (“beniqa”). See a “tanchifa” scarf held at the Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac Museum (inv. 74.1967.11.6) illustrated in the exhibition catalogue De soie et d’Or. Embroideries of the Maghreb, Arab World Institute, Paris, 1996, p. 35. For a similar example, see the embroidery held at the Arab World Institute, under inventory number AI 03-07.
