IKAT DRESS made of dyed silk featuring vibrant patterns with blurred colour combinations, evoking solar and cloud motifs, known locally as abrbandi (literally ‘cloud connection’).The central vertical seam is embellished with a braid embroidered with gold metallic threads Central Asia, Uzbekistan, late 19th–early 20th centuries. AN UZBEK QUILTED SILK IKAT DRESS, LATE 19TH – EARLY 20TH CENTURIES. HEIGHT: 122 CM (48 IN.) NOTE Ikats (“to tie and knot” in Indonesian) are decorated using a dyeing and weaving technique widespread throughout Asia, which developed in Uzbekistan under the name abrbandi, a Persian word whose root, abr, means “cloud”. This technique can be applied to various types of fabric. Each region has its own patterns.
