Description
"THÉODOROS COLOCOTRONIS ON HORSEBACK" STANDING CLOCK in Sienna marble and black-patinated bronze, depicting the Greek general on horseback, galloping. Silver-plated bronze dial with black Roman numerals. France, c. 1830–1840. A MARBLE AND BRONZE CLOCK, "THÉODOROS COLOCOTRONIS ON A HORSEBACK", FRANCE, CA.1830/1840. H. 56 CM (22 1/16 IN.) NOTE A Greek general and the principal military, political and civil leader of the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire, he was appointed commander-in-chief of the Greek forces in the Peloponnese in 1825. His greatest success was the defeat of the Ottoman army commanded by Mahmoud Dramali Pasha at the Battle of Dervenakia in 1822. Today, Colocotronis (1770–1843) is regarded as one of the most prominent figures of the Greek War of Independence.
